The impact of cognitive fatigue on airline pilots performance

Purpose: Air transport is a highly regulated branch of aviation, but it continues to show occurrences where human error present. Fatigue now recognized as hazard which degrades performance and can put flight safety at risk. In this regard, the general objective study assess impact cognitive fatigue on airline pilots how contribute occurrence accidents incidents.Methodology: Three participated in case study. The participants’ was monitored according four methods, being two them subjective nature – sleep diary (SD) Samn-Perelli 7-Point Scale (SPS), other an Psychomotor Vigilance Task (PVT) actigraphy (actiwatch ReadibandTM 5). During their duty periods (FDPs), pilots’ also assessed score delivered by management software (FAID®).Findings: obtained results allowed understand whether are aware alertness identify factors affect levels. Between beginning end each FDP, significant changes were observed concerning assessment SPS scale, reaction time (RT) generated biomathematical models associated technique FAID®.Originality/value: risk accident or serious classified methodologies used. Thus, possible verify if there correspondence between different scales more conservative (with higher risk) than others.
